Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Sheriff, serves in a highly responsible and visible capacity in the protection of life and property, preserves the public peace, prevents crimes, arrests violators of the law, and enforces all laws and ordinances.

Essential Functions

  • Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies/complaints, protecting people and property, and enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws
  • Interview complainants, witnesses, and defendants; prepare appropriate charges to book arrested suspects
  • Serve civil process and criminal warrants
  • Transport prisoners to courtrooms, prisons/jails and medical facilities
  • Carry out orders and enforce directions from State and Federal Court Systems
  • Testify in court to present evidence or act as a witness in traffic and criminal cases

  • Interpersonal skills to foster positive working relationships with team members (peers, supervisors, and subordinates) required to provide superior services in the public interest
  • Skill and strength to use appropriate physical force, including deadly force, when necessary, to prevent the imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to others or self

Examination, Testing, and Certification

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certification
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Ability to obtain Certification by the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy within 12 months of hire date
  • Successful competition in oral interviews
  • Other such examination as deemed appropriate and necessary by the County
  • Subject to background check

This is a non-exempt, full-time benefitted position and is eligible for veterans’ preference.    Meade County offers health/vision, dental, and life insurance, paid leave benefits, and retirement benefits. The position is a member of Class B retirement under the South Dakota Retirement System.
