This job description indicates, in general terms, the type and level of work performed as well as the typical responsibilities of the position.  It may be modified at any time at the discretion of the Department Head and Human Resources. Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Jail Administrator, is responsible for the legal process pertaining to jail records, safety and security protocols in maintaining order, custody and control of the Jail facility.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain the integrity, professionalism, values and goals of the Sheriff's Office by assuring all policies and procedures of the Meade County Jail are followed
  • Process inmates; classify, screen, and assign to jail housing
  • Read, comprehend and process legal and non-legal documents including medical instructions, commitment or release orders, summons, criminal statutes and other documents
  • Perform security rounds during scheduled and unscheduled times
  • Perform person, property, and facility searches 
  • Initiate and monitor inmate movement; recognize abnormal or inappropriate behavior
  • Restrain unruly inmates using force and restraining devices
  • Respond to emergencies, including medical emergencies
  • Dispense medications as required
  • Document incidents, movement, rounds and inmate discipline

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Knowledge of Procedures of jail facilities, codes, and statutes that apply to detention and legal process
  • Proficient use and knowledge of computer software and technology
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to remain calm in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to remain impartial when interacting with inmates
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

Examination, Testing, and Certification

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certification
  • Successful applicant will be required to undergo a background investigation
  • Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening
  • Currently posses, or ability to obtain First Aid/First Responder and CPR Certification
  • Other such examination as deemed appropriate and necessary

This is a non-exempt, full-time benefitted position and is eligible for veterans’ preference.    Meade County offers health/vision, dental, and life insurance, paid leave benefits, and retirement benefits. The position is a member of Class B retirement under the South Dakota Retirement System.
